Books Read in July 2021!

Hi Readers! July is already done and dusted! It was the best month for me reading wise. I read NINE BOOKS this month & I’m super proud of myself. I read THREE CLASSICS, ONE MYSTERY, TWO FANTASY, ONE ROMANCE, ONE AUTOBIOGRAPHY & ONE NONFICTION. Quite a range, am I right?

~~THE BEST~~

I liked only 4 books of the 9 which I read, and even from these, none of them were 5/5 or which entirely wowed me. I am still glad I read them! Check them out below!

THE COMFORT BOOK by MATT HAIG

Ever since I read Matt Haig’s The Midnight Library, I knew I would read all of his books. The Comfort Book is just that, with the most apt title. It takes away all your fears, anxieties, worries & tensions. While reading this book, I felt like I was never alone & that whatever feelings I have are universal & felt by many people around the globe! This is a must-read for everyone! I have rated it at 4.5/5 stars.

IT ENDS WITH US by COLLEEN HOOVER

The first book I read by Colleen Hoover was Verity. I wasn’t a fan of it at all. Even so, I decided to give another book a try. With ‘It Ends With Us’, she won me over. I suppose romance is the genre in which she really shines. I may even read a couple of other romance novels by Colleen Hover. I am going to write a book review on this soon! I have rated it at 4/5 stars!

SIX OF CROWS & CROOKED KINGDOM by LEIGH BARDUGO

I had always wanted to read this duology & I loved reading it. I felt that the first book was far superior than the second. But throughout the story, I loved hanging out with all the amazing characters. From Kaz’s focus to Inej’s courage to Nina’s bravado to Matthias’s sheer will to Jesper’s optimism to Wylan’s brilliance, I learnt a lot from these fictional super heros! I have rated Six of Crows at 4/5 stars & Crooked Kingdom at 3.5/5 stars!

~~THE MEDIOCRE~~

The Mediocre books are funnily enough all classics. As you all know, I am not really into classics, but as part of my 2021 Reading Challenge, I had to read THREE CLASSICS. And, because I was a bit behind schedule, I read these three classics which are fairly short!

THE PEARL by JOHN STEINBECK

I have loved reading John Steinbeck’s ‘Of Mice and Men’. His writing has this quality which makes it easy to read, which is also calming but at the same time you want to continue reading the book. Reading The Pearl was a similar experience & I liked the story as well. It was simple with big life lessons. I have rated it at 3.5/5 stars!

THE HOUSE ON MANGO STREET by SANDRA CISNEROS

When I was searching for short classics, The House on the Mango Street kept coming up in a lot of articles. So, I decided to read it. It’s the kind of book which is not really about anything, but also talks volumes. The prose is like poetry which makes it a wonderful reading experience. I have rated it at 3.5/5 stars!

THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE by JAMES M. CAIN

The Postman Always Rings Twice was another interesting read. It is said to be the benchmark classic mystery crime novel. I liked reading it mainly because it was fast-paced with a lot of twists & turns. I have rated it at 3/5 stars!

~~THE WORST~~

When I say the worst, I do mean it, no matter how difficult it is for me to admit it. The authors of these two books are the ones who I have enjoyed a lot before, so it comes as quite a disappointment.

THE MAIDENS by ALEX MICHAELIDES

Alex Michaelides’ second book is The Maidens. Many readers have loved it, but I sure didn’t. I felt that even though the premise was intriguing, the plot was too predictable. I also didn’t like any characters. I have rate it at 2/5 stars.

IN OTHER WORDS by JHUMPA LAHIRI

This one was extremely disappointing. Jhumpa Lahiri is one of my favourite authors, but in this autobiographical book, I couldn’t find anything worth my interest. All of it was repetitive, boring & a bit privileged. I have rated it at 2/5 stars.

This is the most I have read in a month this year, and I hope the streak continues! Currently, I am reading Angie Thomas’ Concrete Rose.

Until next time,
