Books Read in August 2022!

Hi Readers! August sipped away like a bottle of wine.. How was the month for you? I read 8 BOOKS across 2024 PAGES in August. Three were fiction, one was autobiography & four were graphic novels. I finally have somewhat of a balance in reading. In terms of fiction vs nonfiction, across genres, across number of pages & format of books. This is not intentional, but I am glad it is the way it is. So, go ahead & check the books I read. Maybe you will find your next read in one of these books!

~~FICTION READS~~

~~THE SUN DOWN MOTEL by SIMONE ST. JAMES~~

Multiple ghosts. Multiple dead bodies. One creepy motel unchanged in over 30 years. Young women stationed as the night shift clerks to deal with it all. The premise of this book was strong. Horror & mystery in one novel was also strong. But, you know what happens when the premise is so strong. It fails to deliver. This book came quite close to being good. Even though there was a lot happening, it wasn’t a strain to read through it. But, when I finished the book, I wasn’t satisfied. I found the book to be slightly above average. I have rated The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James at 3/5 stars.

~~THE SIGNATURE OF ALL THINGS by ELIZABETH GILBERT~~

This one’s cover is just so beautiful, that I may have preferred to read it because of that sole reason. I read this 500-page historical fiction novel set in 1800s in three days. I had my moments with it. At times I had more love for it than I could portray. At other times, I had such strong hatred for it that I couldn’t take into action. But with all its hits and misses, it gave me a rollercoaster of a reading experience. The book is divided into five parts. I loved Part One and Two. Part Three is when it went downhill and continued in Part Four. The ending of Part Five was average given the disappointment of the earlier two sections. I have rated The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert at 3.5/5 stars.

~~LESSONS IN CHEMISTRY by BONNIE GARMUS~~

I was seeing this book pop up everywhere, so I finally gave in to the hype. Turns out it was actually worth the hype. This book also has its moments. At times, there is way too much stress about women empowerment with no movement in the actual story. At other times, it is subtle, the way fiction books should be. I loved it initially when I had no idea what the book was about. But, after a while, I was tired of the monotonous dialogues. Some of the parts in the book are taken from today’s worldview, which just seemed out of place for a story set in the 1960s. I have rated Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus at 4/5 stars. I will write its review shortly!

~~AUTOBIOGRAPHY: SACH KAHUN TOH by NEENA GUPTA~~

I watched the mother-daughter duo in the Netflix series Masaba Masaba. I loved both the seasons of the show. This was the main reason I was inclined on reading this book. If it were any other Indian actor, I would not have bothered reading, just because of my lack of interest in their lives.

As expected, Neena Gupta’s autobiography was a wonderful book to read. I was not expecting a flair of language. It was simple & engaging. Being a millennial, I did not have much of an idea about the actress’ film career. So this book was an eye-opener. There were also so many life lessons which she has written about, which are really insightful. I have rated Sach Kahun Toh by Neena Gupta at 3.5/5 stars.

~~GRAPHIC NOVELS: SARAH’S SCRIBBLES~~

I am still riding high on the graphic novels pony. I had read only 3 books all of August, and then BAM! I had read 4 more in 2 days. This month, I hadn’t planned on reading as many. But, when I found out that there were 4 books in the Sarah’s Scribbles series, I just couldn’t resist. These are Adulthood is a Myth, Big Mushy Happy Lump, Herding Cats & Oddball. I found all of these to be so amazingly relatable. I laughed while reading them. I took screenshots of a few pages & shared with my friends. I just enjoyed reading them a lot. I have rated all four books in the Sarah’s Scribbles series at 4/5 stars.
