Marathi Book Recommendation: Asahi by Priya Tendulkar

बुक्स्टाग्रामवर पद्मजा आणि अवंती यांनी 2017 मध्ये #DiscoveringIndiaReadathon सुरु केले. त्यात या वर्षी मी पहिल्यांदा सहभागी झाले. चार प्रोम्पट्सपैकी मी दोन प्रोम्पट्सवर दोन पुस्तके वाचली. म्हंटलं पुस्तक मराठीत वाचलंय तर बुक रिव्ह्यू पण मराठीत लिहायचा प्रयत्न तरी करायला पाहिजे. असे म्हटले तरी तुम्हाला मराठी आणि इंग्रजी दोन्हीचं कॉम्बिनेशन इथे दिसेल.अकदी एक तास लागला हे लिहायला पण शेवटी थोडाफार जमलं असं मी मलाच समजावून सांगितलंय. आता पुस्तकाचे माझे विचार वाचा.

प्रिया तेंडुलकरांच्या ‘असंही’ पुस्तकामध्ये 36 शॉर्ट स्टोरीज 145 पानात लिहिल्या आहेत. प्रत्येक गोष्ट 3 पानांहून जास्त नाहीये म्हणून पटकन वाचून होते. भाषाही सोपी आहे, हे मुख्य कारण होतं मी हे पुस्तक वाचायचं. आधी कधी मराठी पुस्तक वाचलं नसल्यामुळे मला फार अपेक्षा नव्हत्या पण या पुस्तकातल्या गोष्टी खूपच छान आढळल्या.

बहुतेक पुस्तकांमध्ये रिलॅ्टेबल सामग्री असते जिथे आपण गोष्टी आणि पात्रांना रिलेट करू शकतो. हे पात्रांच्या भावनांमध्ये किंवा त्यांच्या जगण्याच्या निर्णयांवरून जाणवतं. पण ‘असंही’ मध्ये सगळ्या गोष्टी वेगळ्याच आहेत. बहुतेक लोकांनी न अनुभवलेल्या आहेत. म्हणून वाचत राहावंसं वाटतं.

कधीकधी एक वयस्कर बाई जिच्याकडे पैसे, बंगला, नोकर-चाकर असतात पण एकटेपण तिच्या आयुष्याचा हायलाईट बनवून ती रडत राहते. कधीकधी गरिबीत राहिलेल्या आईला तिच्या मुलीचा शिक्षण सर्वात महत्वाचे असल्यामुळे ती खूप श्रम करते. एका गोष्टीत व्यसन कसं आयुष्य बदलतं तर एका गोष्टीत एका फेमिनिस्टची सोशल व पर्सनल लाईफ किती वेगळी आहे हे जाणवते.

बऱ्याच गोष्टींमधून स्त्रीशक्ती जाणवते. बऱ्याच गोष्टींमधून डॉक्टर्स, पोलीस, ऍक्टर्स, ड्रायव्हर्स अशी पात्रे आणि त्यांच्या कहाण्या वाचायला मजा येते. पण सगळ्याच गोष्टींमधून “हे असंही होतं?” असा प्रश्न पडतो आणि त्यातच अख्या पुस्तकाचं महत्व समुद्राच्या खोलातून पृष्ठभागावर येऊन असा नवा दृष्टिकोन लाभतो. मी प्रिया तेंडुलकरांच्या ‘असंही’ पुस्तकाला 4/5 स्टार्स दिले आहेत.

Padmaja and Avanti started #DiscoveringIndiaReadathon in 2017 on Bookstagram. I participated in it for the first time this year. Out of the four prompts, I read two books based on two prompts.

Priya Tendulkar’s book ‘Asaahi’ has 36 short stories written in 145 pages. The chapters are not more than 3 pages so it’s a quick read. The language is also simple which was the main reason why I read this book. Having never read a Marathi book before, I didn’t expect much, but I found the content of this book quite good.

Most books have relatable content where we can relate to the story and characters. This is reflected in the emotions of the characters or the decisions they make in life. But in ‘Asaahi’ everything is different. Most people have not experienced it. So I couldn’t put it down.

Sometimes an elderly woman who has money, a bungalow, servants but loneliness becomes the highlight of her life. Sometimes a poor mother works hard because her daughter’s education is the most important thing for her. In one story, we see how addiction changes life. In another story, we see how different the social and personal life of a feminist is.

Women power can be felt in many stories. It is fun to read characters like doctors, police, actors, drivers and their stories. But in all the stories, “It is like this too?” This question arises and the importance of this book lies in the fact that a new perspective comes to the surface from the depths of the sea. I have rated ‘Asaahi’ by Priya Tendulkar at 4/5 stars.
